Flubber - not the movie but the ooey gooey fun stuff you can make. That's what we did today in buddies. Michael Gettings came in with his recipe and everyone jumped into action. It seems that measuring properly is almost as important as getting oneself covered in cornstarch and colored goo. I knew you would want to see the fun so I took pictures. Just in case you need a laugh the recipe is:

Flubber
1/3 cup water
3/4 cup cornstarch
3-6 drops of food coloring

Mix the ingredients gently and wait three minutes. Gently grab liquid and solids to mash them in your hand. They will feel hard momentarily. The warmth of your hand will return the flubber back to a gooey, more liquid state. We think this is the source of the name - fluid and rubber.

Aside from this we also learned the letter J today. Our letter box contained a jump rope, 2 giant jellybeans, a Jello box, play juice, jewels, a jack-o-lantern and the Nursery Rhyme "Jack and Jill". I have made enough PVC phones for everyone so we held them to our ears and listened to the difference between /J/ and /ch/ which are often confusing to children. We then thought of many words beginning with the /j/ sound. That /j/ sound was a little tricky though because some of our words actually began with the letter G.

Next we removed all the coins from my Peace Ball and sorted the pennies from the other coins. I gave out papers with 100 charts on them and as teams they filled them with pennies. In doing so they found a wheat penny and a coin from the Cayman Islands (Let me add that I make a great travel companion!). These were not nearly as impressive as the brand new pennies which the children were sure were NOT pennies. It's an easy mistake to make when you consider they are a bright copper color and thinner than the older well-used pennies in our collection. It was a great lesson on the way coins age - and that your teacher isn't always kidding when she tells you something.

We found that we filled up 4 pages of 100 and came close on a fifth. Tomorrow we will count our other coins and I'll tell them the amount of money they have collected so far.
