We've had a very busy two days. There have been collages finished, Valentines for Seniors started, new games learned, did fabulous yoga, discovered words, and read books.
No wonder most of the class has been sleeping during rest time.

Yesterday we reviewed pictures starting with the letter D and then colored duck faces. Today we cut out those faces (Man, their cutting skills have progressed!) and glued them to paper plates. They will soon be masks so try not to be startled if a large duck appears in your home.

Today I put the short a with the d and we began our journey through the alphabet. As we added letters in front of -ad we found some rarely used words like cad and tad and then the more common bad, dad, fad, had, lad, mad, pad and sad. As I pulled out the next letter in the alphabet you could see light bulbs coming on in several heads when suddenly they realized they could read our new words! This is the moment a teacher lives for and everything else pales in comparison.

Yesterday most of the collages were finished with our buddies so I showed the children how to fold paper in half and cut a heart. We used our "crazy" scissors and made holes with a hole punch. Ribbon was provided for weaving and Voila! a fancy Valentine was made. The centers were left blank so the entire group could later write several messages. Many of these cards will go to local nursing homes but we may split them in half to send some to troops overseas ( through Betsy). It's wonderful to see children get excited about making a card instead of just writing their names on a store bought one.

Today we started a new seeing a reading buddy group. We left our room at 1:00 and walked to Lena's room for an introduction and a story with new friends. We love our buddies in Kim's room and together the two groups are very creative. Lena asked if our classes could be Reading Buddies which gives each class a new age group of children to play with and know. Rowan already knew Sabrina and Natalie from last year and was so excited to see them that any qualms of being with a new group disappeared for everyone. I can't wait to see how this develops! Today we read "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" to prepare for the Hollins play tomorrow.

Since the weather report is a little iffy, tomorrow's play at Hollins has been moved back to 11:00. Please watch the morning news in case school is delayed. Hopefully this front will move out. It is cold outside so please send those heavier coats and mittens with the children. Recess can be miserable for an under-dressed child.

Here's some late, breaking news: Community School has delayed opening until 10:00 tomorrow morning.
