Well the weather outside might be frightful but in our classroom all is delightful. We have had two great days of activities galore.
I read "The Fat Cat" before rest time Wednesday. This humorous tale just happens to use the ten -at words the class discovered this week along with the rhyming words room and broom and fish and dish. It quickly became a favorite and yesterday they acted the story out several times. They were too funny to watch as they tried to use expressive voices and use the actions described in the book.
We also played a new letter game. I have upper and lowercase letter cards on lanyards which I hang on the children's necks. We have learned nine letters so I pulled the uppercase letters for the class. Sofia was the leader so I had her turn away from the others and put a lowercase letter on her. When she turned back around to face the class, her letter partner had to hug her and then the class had to give me a word beginning with that letter. Who know learning letters could be such a loving activity?
The highlight of yesterday was the arrival of Seminar with round coffee filters. They taught the children how to fold and cut them to create snowflakes. Using coffee filters was new to me and I must say it is soooo much easier than folding sheets of tissue paper. Our children are so creative that I didn't worry they would copy their Seminar friends. You can see the beautiful results hanging in our windows.
Although we arrived late today we still had time for some play and a math activity before lunch. I cut thousands (or so it seemed) of 1/2 inch squares from red, green and purple construction paper. We have made patterns before using two colors but the use of three colors was new. I demonstrated a set and Rowan pointed out that it wasn't a pattern. I swear I didn't tell him what to say but it was the perfect segue to explain that only repeated sets can be patterns. As each child made their first set I drew a line at its end so they could visualize the beginning and ending of their sets to create patterns. They were again very creative and did a great job.
Friday is switch day so several of our students left to eat with friends in other classes. I ended up with 14 current, former and maybe future students. I throw down a sheet for a picnic and let them enjoy each other's company. What a treat to watch their interaction! Have a great weekend and stay warm!
