I'm sure you heard all about the man with the camera yesterday. Or maybe you didn't, because our class was so focused on our color discovery activity, I'm not sure they would have noticed anyone else in the room. We started with three watercolors - red, blue and yellow - and began mixing two at a time. As the colors orange, blue and green began to appear, their excitement grew. Brandon suggested we mix all three because he suspected brown would be the result. My bold scientists were ready for the challenge and began the task. Lo and behold, Brandon was right and the color brown appeared in our dish.
As a child my favorite color was chartreuse. Not that I loved the color, but the word itself was exotic and rolled off my tongue. We added differing amounts of yellow and blue together until just the right shade appeared. The children were not nearly as excited as I but I chalked it up to their exposure to more colors than my crayon box contained. We then began changing color ratios to find different hues of colors and even managed to make magenta (another great word to say!).
This morning we reviewed our color exploration and the moved on to learning a new letter. As I pulled a balloon from our letter box they knew the letter was B. A blue button, a bear, a book, an empty bottle, Brandon's picture and a slice of bread confirmed their suspicions. I am amazed every year that the first 10 letters, or so, are really a mystery to the children until the last item is shown but by February they can usually guess the letter by the second item. This year's class has moved a little faster but I still am so tickled to watch this growth occur right before my eyes.
Our buddies came today and we continued making Valentines. I pulled out glitter and glue to their delight and let them add a shiny touch. We probably will finish next week so they can be delivered to a local nursing home or sent overseas.
Yesterday Katlyn brought a container of small connecting shapes. We have large round connecting shapes which Xan named the Connect-O-Shapes. They are quite popular with the children and have become very imaginative with their creations. Katlyn added fuel to the fire and they could hardly wait to add the smaller shapes to their larger ones. I am reminded of the Star Wars movies and their wildly shaped rockets and flying machines. What could be better than watching children create and discover?
