It's coming, it's coming, the Chinese New Year is coming! The first day of this 15 day festival is Sunday (the 10th) and is immediately followed by Fat Tuesday (the 12th) and Valentine's Day on Thursday (the 14th). Soo... we will have 3 very short units, 1 Dragon parade, 1 Mardi Gras parade, 1 party and LOTS of food. I'm already exhausted and probably gained 3 pounds just thinking about the food.
Today we began the Chinese New Year study and made decorations with our buddies in Kim's class. Most chose to make snakes in honor of the coming new year which is the year of the snake. Dawson wanted to make a Kyoto (sp?) dragon with his 2 very sweet buddies. It isn't finished yet but judging from the supplies they took with them, he'll have an incredible decoration.
Friday we will taste several Asian foods and attempt to eat with chopsticks. Before recess we will have a loud, celebratory Dragon parade that will turn Pearl Fu green with envy.
Louise arranged for a professional photographer to come shoot head shots of the children. He is the same photographer as last year and surprised me when he remembered last year's students. Sylvana had a cool face painting I didn't dare even suggesting we wash off but he agreed it was too great to miss. Several others had static hair so several of my boys had spiked hair like Daniel. I tried the Mama Spit trick (with water) but had limited success. All this is to say that our class' head shots will be adorable and the real children they are every day!
I will be at the state Early Childhood conference next Thursday and Friday. Lynn will be with the class and is very much looking forward to doing Valentine crafts with them. In my absence I am asking for parents to help provide a party for the children. While Lynn is great at planning parties and making magic, she also runs the Afterschool program and will be too busy to do everything. I thought it would be nice if several parents would provide semi healthy treats, several more provide paper goods and several plan and provide supplies for a craft. I have many supplies in the classroom which are here to use but any special items would need to be sent in. If you'll let me know what you would like to do, I'll post it here so there isn't an overlap. Thanks in advance and oh!.... let's keep it a secret from the children. They love surprises!
