Happy Fat Tuesday! Our Mardi Gras parade was short and sweet but made up for its speed with VOLUME. Lacking a King's cake to find a plastic baby, I had Django pull a name from a pile of cards and Rylan became our class king. He was a little unsure about picking a queen so we pulled another name from the pile. Sam was our other king and everyone was satisfied.
Yesterday's Chinese New Year was celebrated in here with a small feast. We had vegetable egg rolls, fried rice, Asian candy and fortune cookies. I handed each child a set of chopsticks for eating utensils and we had a mini lesson. It is a challenge so I used rubber bands for those wanting them. Either way takes a little practice but Oliver discovered he use one in each hand and held his food together long enough to get it to his mouth. Let's hear it for creativity! You probably noticed a still wrapped set of chopsticks in your child's backpack last night. Now they can practice for your next take out meal.
We worked again this morning on Place Value. Since today is the twelfth of the month, I put up the number 12 and had them tell me the number of sticks to put in the ones pocket. Next they had to tell me how many bundles of ten to put in the tens pocket. We used several more numbers and added to them to see what happens when the pockets have ten or more sticks (or bundles) in them. I am being a stickler (Hah! I made a pun!) with their language so they must be specific about needing 1 stick, 1 bundle of 10 or 1 bundle of 100 sticks. They see it as a game when I catch them using the wrong words or bundles and we review the "rules" of the game once more.. They're getting pretty savvy now.
I will be at the state early childhood conference Thursday and Friday. Thank you to all have have contacted me with Valentine Day offerings. It's very helpful to be able to tell Lynn what to expect. Here's the current list:
Tanya - craft
Cindy - juice and a treat
Ellen - cupcakes
Lisa - paper goods, fruit and cupcakes
FYI - We do let dads help around here too!
It looks like it will be a great party so thanks to everyone.
Since we have been party central here lately, we early Learner teachers thought it prudent to keep the Valentine parties low key and just do our individual classes. This means your child will only need cards for their classmates. If they already or wish to make them for others, they will be delivered for them. Here is a list of our class:
Alora Daniel Dawson Django Oliver Rylan Sam Sylvana
