This has been a very productive week. So far we had our first buddy yoga (which was fantastic), played with my sacred colored counting rods set, made snow for an art project, reviewed the magic of squares and triangles, read our first "Tacky the Penguin" book and tackled the letter S. And this is only Wednesday.
Monday is now our Buddy Yoga day with Kim H.'s class and some of then are former students of mine so they were ready! I was impressed at how seriously all the students took this form of exercise and listened carefully to my instructions. Kim got a few pictures and will add them to our Facebook page. Our class has child-sized mats which we carry up to the Drama room which is a cute scene all by itself. Hopefully, your child will show you a few poses they learned.
We have been talking about animals and winter habitats. Today I added penguins to the list and just for the sheer fun of it we are reading the "Tacky" series. Tacky is a penguin who never quite fits in, doesn't care and ends up being loved by those around him. Say... he could be a C.S. student! Tacky wears a wild Hawaiian style shirt, talks too loudly and cannot seem to keep instep with typical penguin behavior. He's an "odd bird but very nice to have around" so he is always a favorite of children. Sharon and I are both reading this series to our classes and decided to declare Friday "Tacky" day. Please let your child wear their wildest, tackiest clothes to school Friday.
This week we are focusing on the color black and the letter S. My letter bag was filled with numerous S objects so I guess I shouldn't be surprised at the number of S words the class found to make their list. It began with Oliver's Show & Share which was a sand dollar. They then added 68 more words faster than I could write. The most exciting part was that every child was able to add words to the list, some for the first time, and get cheers from their classmates. I bet your family can think of a few more words at the dinner table tonight.
Looking forward a bit:
I have sent home a Scholastic flyer for January. Orders are due the 23rd by 9:00 in the evening.
There are several very cute books advertised including the latest Pete the Cat book and another "There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed..." book.
We also are in need of toilet paper rolls for next month. Please send empty rolls in with your child. Paper towel rolls will work too.
After playing in the puddles today it became clear that every child in the classroom needs their pant supply replenished. Several of our children also need to bring back their inside shoes (or slippers).
I have been collecting information this year for a greenhouse. This project started as a small room green house but has grown to a small exterior greenhouse to be placed between the Boxwood and Elementary buildings. We have several pledges to make this dream happen but if anyone has ideas or would like to pledge some money (or supplies), our dream can happen faster and we can buy a sturdier building to last many years. When Anna Beebe taught here she got me excited about growing plants with children and each year as I added more plants to the list I began to realize my room was too small and too dark for what my classes were asking to do. My ears are open for your suggestions and help. You can call me or email me (ruthann@communityschool.net).
Watch the news for weather updates. It sounds like winter might finally make an appearance!
