I'm not sure how it happened so quickly but we are already in a new month! As I introduced October to the children we inserted a spooky "ooo" into the word in honor of Halloween. Here's your warning... the sounds are bound to get spookier as the month progresses.
We have been watching as the leaves have begun to change colors and already have quite a collection in our room. On Thursday we joined our Wise Owl buddies to make binoculars and telescopes so we could more easily see the leaves in the trees. First we looked through real binoculars and saw spider webs, birds and walls we missed with our naked eyes. Toilet paper and paper towel rolls provided the base for our binoculars and some decorative treasures from Sharon and my stashes added the embellishments. Although our binoculars didn't really magnify they were lovely!
Remember the song "There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly"? We started singing that the first week of school and have it memorized now so I pulled a fall version called "There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed Some Leaves" . You'll have to ask your child what came out when she sneezed.
In keeping with the season, Alora brought miniature pumpkins and gourds today. We often see gourds this time of year but have you touched one lately? The children were amazed at the difference in the textures of the gourds: some were very smooth, some were very bumpy and some had hard fin-shaped projections. Alora gave each child a gourd or a pumpkin so you may want to inspect your child's book bag.
You will find a note stapled to your child's notebook today concerning our field trip Thursday. You may remember, we are going with our buddies to Keri Jackson's farm and to the Booker T. Washington National Monument. This is going to be an all day extravaganza of outdoor learning and play. The Jackson's have a Mongolian yurt on their farm which we'll go see. To get to the yurt, however, we must cross a stream so the rain boots will be needed. Please send your child in their regular shoes and I'll take the boots in my car for a quick change.
Since we won't return to campus until about 2:30, our half day students are invited to stay all day. The ride back from the farm is a minimum of 45 minutes and I'm confident my class will fall asleep after a day of fresh air and running. I'm also confident I will sleep very soundly Thursday night.
Fall Festival plans were firmed up yesterday and I must say i think this will be our best year yet! We are going to make scarecrows as one of our activities Wednesday but will need your help gathering old clothes, hay, straw and decorations. Just send items in and we'll store them until next week.
