They're finally here! I mean, of course, the yoga mats. We opened the boxes with Christmas morning anticipation and to our delight found PURPLE mats had been sent to us. There is no better color to children of this age so they were squealing - until they noticed it. One by one their little noses noticed the smell of new propylene. Trust me, it's not good. We immediately took them outside for airing which took only about an hour. By 11:15 we were on our new sticky mats doing poses with a balance never seen before in this room. They were thrilled with the difference their mats made. If anyone is interested in buying one of these child-sized mats for home, I ordered them from Yoga Direct (yogadirect.com).

It's all about the numbers. How do they compare to each other? How many different ways can we arrive at the same number? When we add groups of objects together what do we have now? You and I call it addition but to the children it's a whole new world of making new numbers from other numbers. And it's exciting. We have used plastic beans of set numbers and separated them into as many variations as possible, put groups of numbers together and counted until the children realized they were adding. Then I told them they were doing Kindergarten work and they really got excited about counting!

We have been using the watercolor palettes lately for free art. Each day as the children experiment with colors and the liquid to paint ratio, I see them growing as young artists and scientists. They like to share their methods of reaching color intensity and which colors to mix to arrive at the beautiful creations on their paper. Xan even found a way to paint a Black Hole.

You may have heard from your child yesterday that the bake sale sold out quickly. Fortunately I had brought a treat for the staff and ran to the kitchen to retrieve them. I don't know their official name but I grew up calling the "Crackies". They're made from saltine crackers, butter, brown sugar and dark chocolate. I was surprised when the children liked them since this group doesn't like their "sweet treats" to be too sweet.

All this brings me to the subject that the choir will not be sponsoring the next 2 bake sales. POP and Betsy's class will sponsor the 18th and our class with Tulie's class will sponsor June 2nd. Since the choir will not need the money, Tulie and thought our classes could use their earnings to buy flocks of chicks for the Heifer Project. I will send home a note tomorrow asking if you wish to participate by sending in a baked item for our sale. Please return them as soon as possible- even if your answer is no. There is no judgment attached - just a need to know what we can expect.
