As most of you could see, we painted our birdhouses yesterday. I did make a good faith effort to clean paint off children with baby oil but on several children the task was too great. I used so much on several on several children that I have decided to refer to yesterday as "oil slick" day.
The bird houses look very much like children painted them - drips and all. Since several parents asked how they would know which one(s) their child worked on I have labeled them with names of the artists. My husband cut out several more and if time allows we will make them.
Yesterday Rowan brought our class a present. His family bought us our own copy of
Rhyming Dust Bunnies". They love the story so much they asked to act it out. I borrowed a camcorder from Lelia and today we went through the story several times before recording it. We had a visitor who will spend the morning with us next week but his parents wanted him to meet me and see the room today. Once the children started to act out their story he decided to stay until recess. He is younger than our class is now but knows a great cast and production when he sees one!
Next week we will be talking that ever mysterious force of nature - gravity. The word inevitably comes up when discussing space. It keeps us grounded (literally), the moon near us and the planets in their orbital paths. Xan has waited two weeks for that word to be explained and the time is finally coming. I ask a favor of parents; please use the word as much as possible this weekend but don't define it. Once they see a few examples of it and hear a definition, your words will have more meaning and they'll be able to tell me how the word is used in everyday speech.
Don't forget to sign up for your festival hours.
